Exam Anxiety Addressed at CIU
In collaboration with the Cyprus International University (CIU) Psychology Club and the Psychological Counseling and Guidance Center (PDAREM), a seminar titled "Exam Anxiety and Effective Preparation for Exams" was organized to enhance students' psychological resilience and support academic success ahead of final exams.
The event was conducted bilingually, in both Turkish and English, to accommodate the university’s multilingual environment. This approach ensured active participation from students of various language groups and made the information accessible to all.
The seminar featured Dr. Cemaliye Şemmedi, a faculty member from the CIU Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Department of Psychology, and Clinical Psychologist Zeynep Suiçmez from PDAREM as speakers. A large number of university students attended the event.
Students were informed on various topics such as the nature, causes, and symptoms of exam anxiety, the ABC model, functional and dysfunctional thought patterns, coping strategies, memory processes, strategies for transferring information to long-term memory, and recommendations for the pre-exam, during-exam, and post-exam phases.
For CIU students, this event provided significant support in reducing exam anxiety, which directly affects academic performance. Students received not only information but also emotional support, allowing them to approach the exam period with greater awareness and preparation. The importance of psychological education in coping with increasing levels of anxiety and stress among university youth was once again highlighted. The event aimed to protect mental health while also boosting motivation for success.
Feedback from students at the end of the event indicated positive evaluations regarding the applicability of the techniques presented and their contribution to daily life. The CIU Psychology Club and PDAREM announced plans to continue organizing similar student support events in the future.
